For all of us, the Bible has been a highly complicated book at some point or the other. Some of us would have understood the Gospels from the New Testament, however, the Old Testament seemed so confusing and even dull to scores of us.
As a child when I read the Bible, there wasn't much I understood. It seemed far too complex for my intellectual capacity. I ended up avoiding the Bible. However, it was when Jesus personally ministered to my heart, that conduced to deep conviction and total surrender to Him, that I was able to look at His word in a new manner.
I began reading the Bible regularly and there were lots of passages that I understood nothing about. But, each time I would hit such passages, I would pray, 'Lord, you explain to me what this passage means'. And as the days passed by, the answers to my questions were answered by God.
He explained the meaning of verses through circumstances in my life, through parables, etc. Soon my face began to glow with excitement of the knowledge of God. It was enthralling to have God Himself, through His Holy Spirit teach me the meaning of the various Bible verses. The confusing Bible verses became good Bible verses that encourage me when I am down, bring a smile to my face when I am upset, strengthen me when I am weak, etc.
Good Bible Verses to Live by Horrendous Times
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Meaning: What a promise this is! God is asking us to not be troubled by anything; not our work, not our family issues, not our weaknesses, etc. In times of uncertainty and strife, God wants us to pray and bring our requests before Him with thanksgiving. Thanksgiving because you know how great your God is and how there is no problem too difficult for Him to solve.
The result of this thanksgiving prayer time is the peace that is beyond human understanding will flood our hearts and minds. It's God's beautiful gift. You will be amazed how even during a financial crunch or dire circumstance you are not worried and frenzy, but are at peace knowing the King of Kings will not let you go through more than what you can bear.
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Meaning: In harrowing situations, when nothing makes sense, the storms are too overwhelming, this verse has always comforted me. God has promised us in this verse, that come what may, He is there with us. He, the King of Kings will give us strength and lift us out of the pit. Cling to this promise during dire circumstances. God is faithful. If He has said He will uphold you with His righteous hand, He will do so. Unbelief will lead you nowhere. Believe in Jesus and you will find rest.
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Meaning: This is yet another verse the Lord God used to comfort me during a tough time I was going through. All through the night, even as I dreaded the next morning, I clung on to this verse and kept repeating it to myself. I kept claiming this promise, all the while believing that Jesus Christ has the power to level every mountain, every embarrassing and painful situation.
Good Bible Verses about Love and Forgiveness
John 3: 16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Meaning: According to me, this is the best Bible verse on love. It talks about how God loved us sinners so much that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ to die for us on the cross, so that those of us who believe in Him will have eternal life! Is there a better expression of love? Can we lay down our lives for anybody around us? What is the best thing somebody who has loved you done for you? Jesus died for you and me on the cross, because He loves us so much. Why don't we understand the depth of His love?
Luke 6: 32-36
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
Meaning: This was not one of my favorite verses in the Bible. I could simply not comprehend how I was expected to love my enemies. After all who are our enemies? Those who have hurt us, stabbed us in the back, cheated on us! For me it seemed impossible to love my enemies. But read the words of this verse slowly and carefully.
It says loving those who love you is no big deal! True, isn't it! The crux is forgiveness. Forgive those who have hurt you and God will release you from bitterness and hatred. Once you forgive, God pours into your heart this abundant love for that person. I have experienced this. Today, I can look into the eyes of those who have hurt me and give a sincere smile. I have seen how God's love has changed me as a person.
1 Peter 4:8
"And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins."
Meaning: The Bible asks us to love one another sincerely and honestly from the heart. People have enveloped artificiality to such a great extent that they have forgotten how to speak out of sincerity. The kind of love that the Bible talks is genuine love, which does not condemn, gossip, wrongly judge or back bite a person. True love is the kind of love our Father in Heaven has for us. The Father looks at us through the blood of Jesus; pure and blameless. This is the way we are to look at those around us. While we cannot expect to love those around us sincerely in our own strength, it is important to depend on God to give us this divine ability.
Bible Verses for Sports
Philippians 3: 13,14
"But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Meaning: This verse is a great encouragement verse for all those involved in sports activities. People who have lost in the last sport's event often end up getting discouraged. For them this verse is relevant, wherein, the Holy Bible talks about letting go of the past, wiping it off from memory and pressing on forward to win the race that is marked before them. The attitude during practice sessions should be to give one's best and the Lord will take care of the rest. Getting the first prize is important, however, what is more important is giving your best to Jesus. With this attitude if one runs, one will never get discouraged.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize."
Meaning: This verse talks about diligence and putting every ounce of what you have got into the training. Without sowing in effort and practice, one cannot expect to get the prize. There is no point following a lazy routine and then falling on your knees and expecting God to work a miracle. Train sincerely and run with the aim to get the prize.
Just by reading the Bible verses I have listed above, does not mean these Bible verses will become meaningful to you. You need to personalize these verses. Bible verses are truly profound and those who get the grasp of it know what hidden treasures lie in the Bible. To the ignorant, the Bible still remains a dull, boring book.
No matter how much we deny this fact, but, we all know we have this God shaped vacuum within us, that nobody can fill; not our spouse, not our children, not money and not even fame. It's something that only God can fill. Jesus Christ says, 'Come to me'. He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. Open the door, let the King of Glory come in. He will transform your life, like how He has transformed mine! Jesus never fails!
